3 tips for your LinkedIn profile photo

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

Your profile photo is one of the first things that will be seen on LinkedIn, so make sure you are making the best impression with a great headshot. After helping hundreds of our clients with great LinkedIn photos, here are a few tips we've learned.

  1. Dress smart. You don't have to wear a suit in your LinkedIn headshot photo, because appropriate work attire varies based on your industry. Pick clothing you would wear for a job interview. Avoid busy patterns and keep your jewelry minimal.

  2. Keep it simple. Your profile photo on LinkedIn appears in a small format and when you click on the photo it doesn't get much larger. The key to a small image being easy to "read" is simplicity. Avoid busy backgrounds. Don't apply filters your photos.

  3. Crop tightly. Because the profile photos are so small, the image should be cropped so that the photo is about 60% your face. Below is the original photo. Above is the best LinkedIn crop.
